Sam Goody is a music and entertainment retailer in the United States and formerly in the United Kingdom. It is owned and operated by Musicland, which itself is owned by former rival Trans World Entertainment which ... runs Suncoast Motion Picture Company and, until January 2006, Media Play. It specializes in music sales, and has historically been one of the major players in the music industry. The Musicland Group was once the largest music retailer in the country, operating at its peak more than 1300 stores — over 800 of them Sam Goodys — and earning over $2 billion in annual revenue.
Sam Goody is six times bigger than Tower Records and generates more than four million purchase transactions every month. Sixteen million customers pass through the doors on a monthly basis seeking out the latest sounds.

"With the addition of f.y.e., Sam Goody and Suncoast, reward earners in search of the latest entertainment offerings now have coast-to-coast shopping locations," said Tracy McFadden, AEIS vice president of DirectSpend marketing and merchant partnerships. "Music lovers, gamers and movie buffs can add to their collections using their DirectSpend card for in-store or online purchases."
The Sam Goody's ultimate unsigned band search kicked off this week with concerts held in New York as the search moves on to Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, Dallas, and Miami. The finals will be held the week of March 21st in Panama City, Florida, during Spring Break. Sam Goody music retail stores, primary corporate sponsor of Bandemonium, recently expanded its 5-year-old "battle of the bands" search into a year-round, in-store commitment to new and emerging artists.

In the 1990s Sam Goody entered the UK market and established a presence in a number of English towns, such as Weston-super-Mare and Stockport, with a "deep catalogue" retail format that included a large amount of "recurrent" music albums and videos. However whereas this format might have been successful in the United States in the 1980s and early 1990s, in the United Kingdom it came under pressure from a range of price led and established retailers. By the start of the 2000s Sam Goody had exited from UK marketplace selling its stores off to rival retailers.
Sam Goody may be replaced by Ricky's Candy, Cones and Chaos, a candy, ice cream and party store. The business' co-owners, Rick Barber and Charles Alario, are currently awaiting approval from the Princeton Regional Planning Board to open the store, according to an article in The Princeton Packet.
