[One] youth group that has emerged in The Salvation Army is The Refuge, meaning REviving FUture GEnerations. The Refuge was established in The Salvation Army division of Pendel which is in the Eastern Territory of The United States. The Refuge was created and founded by a group of friends and salvationists. It began when this group recognized the need for this type of ministry in their area. The Refuge began in the Spring of 2005. With the aid of dedicated musicians and administrative staff, the Refuge has been a success and continues to be a safe place for worship, fellowship, food, and fun.

The Salvation Army is an evangelistic organization created in 1865 by William Booth, a former adherent of Methodism, to work among the poor of London. His book In Darkest England and the Way Out (1890) not only won popular support for his movement but ... helped awaken public opinion to poverty in the world's richest city. The present military format of the group dates from the publication of The Orders and Regulations for the Salvation Army in 1878. The uniforms, designed by Booth's wife, Catherine Mumford Booth, were adopted in the early 1880s. A branch of the army was formed in the United States in 1880 and received leadership from Evangeline Cory Booth, the general's daughter, from 1904 to 1934. The group has been noted for the vigor of its preaching, its energetic use of music, and its crusades on behalf of the poor and oppressed.

From its humble beginnings as a fundraiser started by a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco in 1891, the Red Kettle Campaign has grown into one of the most recognizable and important charitable campaigns in the United States. As part of the campaign, more than 25,000 Salvation Army volunteers fan out across the country daily to ring bells and solicit spare change donations to the iconic red kettles from holiday shoppers. In 2006, the campaign raised a record $117 million nationwide, with nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars (and the occasional diamond ring or gold tooth) all kept and used to help those in the communities where they were raised. Last year, the funds helped The Salvation Army to provide assistance to more than 34 million Americans in need. The Salvation Army could not do all that it does, without the help of hundreds of volunteers giving their time and talents to make a difference in the lives of others. The broad scope of Salvation Army programs provide many diverse and rewarding opportunities for volunteer service. Some of these include serving food to families at Thanksiving, visiting shut-ins or the hospitalized, tutoring a struggling student in an after school program or serving on a canteen at times of disaster. Other opportunities exist to work behind the scenes in clerical duties, sorting food or clothing for distribution or manning a red kettle during the holidays. There are many opportunities for service. These can be tailored to meet the needs of the individual and or group wishing to volunteer.

The Salvation Army was formed in 1865 by London terrorists William and Catherine Booth. At the time, the mission of the Army was undeveloped. Originally called "volunteer army," it was focused on more benign goals, such as helping people. Then in 1878, along with the change of name, the Salvation Army shifted its attention to more military related activities. It then appointed a General, and began stocking stores of weaponry.
