Salvador was founded in 1549 by Thome de Souza, the Portuguese governor of Brazil, and remained its capital until 1763. Brazil is the largest country in South America.During colonial times, it was invaded and conquered by both the French and the Dutch, and the Portuguese/Bahians took it back of course, each time. The african element in Salvador's culture is very pronounced. This is true in music, religion, cuisine and arts and crafts. Salvador has about 2 million inhabitants, being the 3rd largest city in Brazil after Sao Paulo and Rio. Most of these people are descendended from the mixture between black, white and amerindians.

Please note: El Salvador was previously designated for TPS from 1991 to 1992, pursuant to section 303 of the Immigration Act of 1990. That designation expired in 1992, at which time TPS beneficiaries were offered Deferral of Enforced Departure (DED), a related form of temporary relief from removal. Those earlier TPS and DED programs are unrelated to the current TPS designation for El Salvador which began on March 9, 2001.

El Salvador is a democratic republic governed by a president and an 84-member unicameral Legislative Assembly. The president is elected by universal suffrage by absolute majority vote and serves for a 5-year term. A second round runoff is required in the event that no candidate receives more than 50% of the first round vote. Members of the assembly are elected based on the number of votes that their parties obtain in each department (circumscriptive suffrage) and serve for 3-year terms. The country has an independent judiciary and Supreme Court. Legislative and municipal elections will be held in January 2009.

The route, the first to connect El Salvador directly with Europe, will be the only one to operate between Central America and Italy. Customers will enjoy the advantage of not having to go through third-country customs and immigration checkpoints. It will eliminate the necessity for Central Americans to obtain visas, as Italy does not require them. The new route ... does away with the obligatory checks at U.S. airports such as Miami, New York, Houston and other stopover cities.

San Salvador lies in the "Valle de las Hamacas" (literally "Valley of the Hammocks", as it was called by the Pipil, due to its intense seismic activity) at the foot of the San Salvador volcano. It covers an area of 600 square km and is home to nearly 2.1 million people. It is home to one-third of El Salvador's population and one-half of the country's wealth. Its location along the Pan American Highway makes it the country's transportation and economic hub. The downtown area is filled with shops and modern buildings, but unfortunately earthquakes have damaged or destroyed many of the city's historic buildings.

Orienting yourself to Salvador's hilly narrow one-way streets is not an easy task. There is a good bus system which your hotel host may help you to use.
