Salma Hayek is a Mexican actress. She started out doing local theater, including a role as the female lead in "Aladdin and His Marvelous Lamp". Theater work eventually led to commercials, which finally led to a part on a series called "Un nuevo amanecer". Hayek was considered a star in Mexico for her role as Teresa in the popular soap opera of the same name. Hayek moved to Los Angeles in 1991, a complete unknown in a city full of aspiring actors. Foreign to the English language, Hayek spent the next 18 months taking English lessons, while perfecting her acting skills with drama teacher Stella Adler.

She went on to commercial work, then joined the cast of popular daytime TV serial Nuevo Amanecer (New Dawn) in 1988. It was her second soap opera role, in Teresa, that shot the twenty-year-old to instant sensational popularity in Mexico. Along with the public acclaim, she received Premio TV y Novela (Emmy equivalent) and Heraldo awards for Best Actress and Best Newcomer. Hayek has freely admitted that she and her brother Sami were spoiled rotten by her well-to-do Lebanese businessman father and her Mexican-born opera singing mother. After having seen Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) in a local movie theatre, Salma decided she wanted to become an actress. Her education included a stint at a New Orleans convent school, where she pulled pranks on the nuns by setting their clocks back three hours. She was soon expelled. Only after attending Mexico City's Universidad Iberoamericana did she feel ready to pursue acting seriously.
