Salamander: Salamanders
built 645 days ago
Different members of the salamander order have developed different ways of breathing. Sirens keep their gills all their lives, allowing them to breathe underwater. Others, such as the tiger salamander, lose their gills as they grow older and develop lungs to breathe air. But most, like the arboreal salamander Aneides lugubris and the California slender salamander Batrachoseps attenuatus, don’t have lungs or gills as adults. Commonly called lungless salamanders, they breathe through their skin and the thin membranes in the mouth and throat.

If a salamander is being attacked, then its tail falls off. That distracts the predator long enough for the salamander to make a quick getaway. If the salamander happens to lose any limbs in the process, it can regenerate or re-grow any of its body parts. It will be able to make a perfect copy of the part. The younger the salamander is, the faster it will be able to re-grow body parts. Scientists are very interested in how salamanders regenerate body limbs.
Description: A large (up to 9”) stout-bodied salamander with a ground color ranging from salmon to pinkish orange. Black spots, flecks, or mottling are present on the body, but may be obscured in older, darker animals. The belly is usually clear. A light line runs from the eye to the nostril, then to the upper lip. This line is usually bordered by darker pigment.
longtallsally BEEC representatives said this was a banner year for salamander migration awareness. Hollis Burbank-Hammarlund, the executive director, said that 125 local residents called and asked to be notified when the migration began to take place. The volunteers observed the migration at a pair of vernal pools on Grimes Road.
