Salamander: Fires
built 617 days ago
Several enemies that later became staples of the Gradius series appeared in Salamander for the first time - among them the Golem (the first boss) and the Intruder (the second boss). The ever-present Moai heads are back as well, although they aren't as difficult to kill as they are in Gradius. All three games have only six levels to play through (although after the ending of each you can play through them again at a higher difficulty setting), and they all control extremely well. The Vic Viper responds perfectly to your commands, so if you slam into a wall or something, you really have no one to blame but yourself. One minor problem in Salamander 2 is that when you start the game, you're limited to one slow speed until you pick up a speed icon. At least in the first two games your default speed is manageable.

This is a fairly large salamander that is gray or black with large, rounded, yellow or orange spots from the head through the tail. The belly is pale slate without spots or blotches. Adults reach a total length of 4.5-7.75 in (11.2-9.7 cm). The males are slightly slimmer than the females and in the breeding season they may be recognized by the protuberant vent. With first warm rains they breed in pools with egg masses up to 200. The eggs hatch in 30 to 55 days.

In early spring, the blue-spotted salamander will migrate to vernal ponds. Males arrive first. Vernal ponds make good breeding grounds. Vernal ponds are temporary ponds that form in the spring when the snow melts. Vernal ponds or pools eventually dry out. This prevents predators that might eat the salamanders, like fish and frogs, from establishing themselves.

EcoTarium is home to one tiger salamander that lives in the bog of the Freshwater exhibit on the first level of the museum. On your next visit, take some time to look for the tiger salamander and the spotted salamander that ... lives in the bog. Be sure to look carefully. These animals spend most of their days underground or under logs to keep their soft bodies moist.

SALAMANDER ROBOT: Scientists have fashioned a walking, swimming, slithering robot that mimics a salamander, the amphibian thought to bear close resemblance to the first land-dwelling vertebrates. By studying the salamander-bot's movements, researchers may learn more about how animals evolved walking abilities during their transition from water to land.

Scientists have created a salamander-like robot that married biology and robotics and enabled them to explore ideas about the first vertebrates that emerged from water to land hundreds of millions of years ago. more info
