Sal Mineo: His Life, Murder, and Mystery Sal Mineo finally has a bio about him. And the results are mixed! Although the book contains many insightful information,it ... has a tendancy to keep centering on Sal's sexual exploits, sometimes over-shadowing other important issues. Also, Jeffers seems obsessed with reminding the reader he had sexual relations with Mineo. If this is true,it didn't appear the two of them had anything more than a few one nighters. But if telling readers he had sex with Sal boasts his little ego,let him get his 15 minutes of fame,at Sal's expence.I just hope, somebody ELSE write a bio on Sal,that doesn't STOOP LOW to EXPLOIT SEX,just for the sake of selling more books, and writes a more detailed portrait of Sal Mineo, that includes ALL aspects of Sal's life.
Sal Mineo: His Life, Murder, and Mystery Sal Mineo was gay and initially unhappy about it, Jeffers says. Although his family never accepted it, he eventually embraced his homosexuality, which allowed him to understand his feelings for James Dean during the filming of Rebel without a Cause , which even included a scene, cut before release, in which the two men kissed. At his death in 1976, Mineo was best remembered for that film. Some fans may have known he had come out, but few knew he had become a successful stage director of the gay-themed play Fortune and Men's Eyes , which New York gays rallied round as a kind of liberation statement. Jeffers was closely associated with Mineo, and his warmth toward the one-time "Switchblade Kid" is patent. Mineo's late night murder behind his LA apartment gave the tabloids something to scream about, and it remains unsolved.

All three of the main stars (James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo) died under tragic circumstances. Dean was killed in a traffic accident on September 30, 1955 aged 24, Wood drowned on November 29, 1981 aged 43, and Mineo was murdered on February 12, 1976 aged 37. In addition, Nick Adams is often linked to the urban legend surrounding this film. Adams, often considered "The Poor Man's James Dean", attempted to let the spirit of Dean live vicariously through Adams in his work, which was notably most successful with The Rebel. But following an Oscar nomination for Twilight of Honor, his career began to decline and he allegedly died of a drug overdose on February 7, 1968 aged 36 (although several people, including his own daughter, believe he may have been murdered).
It was here that actor Sal Mineo was robbed and stabbed to death in Feb.1976 at the age of 37 in the carport of his apartment building. Sal together with his co-stars of Rebel Without a Cause, James Dean - Natalie Wood and Nick Adams all died of a violent or unusual death.
In 1959, Mineo starred as the titular jazz drummer in the film biography The Gene Krupa Story, and a year later earned a second Oscar nomination for his work in Exodus. In 1962, he co-starred in The Longest Day, but then the offers stopped coming in. Apart from 1965's The Greatest Story Ever Told, the majority of his subsequent projects were low-budget offerings, and eventually he turned almost exclusively to television.
