Although the game (and the new Sakura Wars TV series) is mainly about romance and action, the 1st OAV series is slow. It gave a fairly detail background about Sakura and Sumire (another Sakura Wars character), but background for other characters are not very well presented. Knowing the game will help one understand story well.

Sakura Wars TV is off to a nice start, with the character reintroductions and a taste of what will follow in terms of conflict. The expanded format length is allowing a less rushed approach, as the elements that make up the series fall into place. If you enjoy the steam punk technology, and a well rounded story development, this series promises to deliver.

Sakura Wars was produced by Sega, and the anime as well as the games were a big hit in Japan. The TV series are only available for Japanese viewers, but recently a whole new version of the OVA was published in English and Japanese. Sakura Wars is a story of love and courage, accentuated with a huge dose of humor.

Sakura Wars TV is presented in its original 1.33:1 full-frame aspect, and to be honest, the video isn't great, especially during early episodes where the focus seems noticeably soft. While this gets better as the series goes on, you could never say that the video looks anything other than average. The poor quality leads to some noticeable instances of aliasing.
