The Saint Louis Cardinals are Saint Louis's Major League baseball team and a member team of the National League since 1892. The team were formed as part of the American Association in 1882, and at that time were called the Browns, under which name they joined the NL when the American Association went out of business. They were briefly the Perfectos during 1899 before settling on their present name. The Cardinals play at Busch Stadium. (In 1901 the Milwaukee Browns came to St Louis, where they played as the St Louis Browns before relocating to Baltimore as the Orioles in 1954).

The Saint Louis Cardinals joined the National Leauge in 1891, after playing in the American Association as the Brown Stockings. The team changed there name to the cardinals after they changed the color of their uniforms from brown to red in 1900. the change of name did not make the team any better but the establishment of a deep farm system. One of the best players to come out of the Red Birds farm teams was Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby, who hit over .400 three times he “only” hit .397 and .384 the other two years. He recorded the 20th century’s highest batting mark ... at .424 in 1924. Hornsby also won the Triple Crown (league best Batting average, Homeruns and RBI’s), in 1922 and then again in 1925.Hornsby Retired with the NL’s highest career average and seven batting titles.

Pierre Laclede and his stepson, Auguste Chouteau, founded Saint Louis as a trading post in 1763. The city proper was established on February 15, 1764. After the French and Indian War, Saint Louis was controlled by Spain, but it was returned to France, along with the rest of the Louisiana Territory, during the Napoleonic Wars. The city was acquired from France by the United States under President Thomas Jefferson in 1803, as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Saint Louis later became the starting point for western explorers (such as the Lewis and Clark expedition), trappers (such as Ashley's Hundred), and settlers moving west.

Saint Louis Cardinals--Old Memories, New Beginnings piece depicts the last regular season game played at the old Busch Stadium on Sunday October 2, 2005. The fans came early to see the stadium one last time. Depicted in the piece are the sea of fans surrounding the old stadium and crossing the old familiar pedestrian walkway from Stadium Garage-West. This vantage point provided a view of the old and new ballpark, as well as the wrecking ball.
The St. Louis Cardinals made it to the World Series in 2003. But the Cardinals were stopped short in a sweep by the Red Sox in 2004. The St Louis Cardinals are back this year ... to make another run.
