Situated along the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec, Lac Saint-Pierre is an unusual example in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves since it includes a major waterway in an industrialized area. The Lac Saint-Pierre is ... a unique ecosystem, important for migratory birds and essential for the protection of Quebec and Canada. For instance, the largest number of herons recorded in North America is found in protected habitats in this area, which is also recognized as a Ramsar site. The Federal and Provincial governments have made considerable investments in monitoring and rehabilitating the Saint Lawrence River and recent studies on water quality shows a continuing improvement over the last 15 years. Due to declining fish stocks, fishing practices are now being questioned and fish stock maintenance is one of the challenges of the biosphere reserve.

Champlain's resource surveys of the Atlantic Coast and Saint Lawrence River between 1603 and1607 were the first exploration in this area since Cartier and Bellenger. This map shows five of Champlain's exploration routes. The map ... shows the extent of territory known to Europeans in the period 1497 to 1650; and the navigation of all exploration routes during the period of the penetration of the Eastern Great Lakes and Hudson Bay from 1600 to 1650. The historical names found on the map are derived from contemporaneous maps and written documents of the period.

The Saint Lawrence River begins at the outlet of Lake Ontario and flows to the northeast. In its upper course, which includes the scenic Thousand Islands, the river forms the boundary between the province of Ontario and the state of New York. The river then widens into Lake Saint Francis, which serves for a short distance as the border between the provinces of Ontario and Québec, before flowing wholly in Québec for the remainder of its course. At Montréal the river expands to create Lake St.-Louis, and below Sorel it forms the much larger Lac Saint-Pierre. Below Québec the Saint Lawrence broadens from a width of about 3 km (about 2 mi) to about 145 km (about 90 mi) at its mouth.

Beginning in the Saint Lawrence River, the seaway leaves Quebec through Lac Saint-François, passing through the Akwesasne Mohawk First Nation. At Cornwall and Massena, the river and seaway form an international waterway, with Ontario on the northern shore and New York State on the southern shore. Cornwall and Massena are joined by an international bridge over the St. Lawrence, the Seaway International Bridge, named for the seaway.

The Saint Lawrence River is born at the outflow of Lake Ontario at Kingston, Ontario. From there, it passes Brockville, Cornwall, Montreal, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City before draining into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the largest estuary in the world. It runs 1900 miles (3058 kilometers), and together with the Great Lakes which it drains, and their tributaries, forms the world's largest fresh-water system.
