In 1988 Sade went on their world Stronger Than Pride tour. Augmenting Sade were Blair Cunningham (drums), Martin Ditcham (percussion), Leroy Osbourne (vocals), Gordon Hunte (guitar), James McMillan (trumpet) and Jake Jacas (trombone & vocals).

Sade was taken from her mother, who was addicted to drugs, and placed in foster care at the age of 13. She lived in seven different foster placements, mostly group homes with teen prostitutes, until she was put in transitional housing, a two-bedroom apartment she shares with a roommate in Hayward.

In 1985 Sade appeared in the film Absolute Beginners, directed by Julian Temple. She played singer Athene Duncannon, performing "Killer Blow," co-written by her with Simon Booth of soul/jazz band Working Week.

Sade rushes to get as many applications filled out before she has to leave for work. Her shift begins at 1 p.m. in San Leandro, where she works for the Youth-Led Evaluation Project, funded by the Casey Family Foundation.

Sade released Stronger Than Pride and continued her smoky style with tours and television appearances. Tracks such as "Paradise," "Love Is Stronger Than Pride," and "Nothing Can Come Between Us" continued Sade's popularity.

"They mean business when it comes to emancipating," says Sade. "I've known people in foster care who came home on their 18th birthday and found garbage bags with their stuff on the driveway.
