Sade: Lovers Rock
built 450 days ago
On its release in 2000, Lovers Rock was the first collection of new work by Sade in eight years. It's an album that's by turns moving, elegiac and beautiful. Like the tender, acoustic guitar-driven By Your Side, a song about the tensile strength of love, it is music stripped back to its essential elements: voice, melody, and meticulously arranged instrumentation. The result is a record of bare, sometimes startlingly, immediacy.

Lovers Rock is Sade's first new studio album in over eight years. It was recorded in England and Spain, and was produced by Sade with co-production by Mike Pela, who Sade has worked with on all her previous albums.

Of the 13 songs on Lovers Live, only five are from the Lovers Rock CD, the rest being mostly the usual suspects from the brilliant, but not very extensive, Sade songbook. The most noticeable omission on the live CD is, in fact, the title song from Lovers Rock, which seems a tad surprising given it was part of the concert and was performed very well.
