Saddam Hussein is the latest in a long line of public figures to be used as bait by malware authors and hackers. Politicians such as Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Clinton, George W Bush and PW Botha have been have been used in the past. Furthermore, the promise of glimpses of glamorous pin-ups like Halle Berry, Anna Kournikova, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears or the stars of 'Sex and the City' have previously been used to help viruses spread.

The media's patriotic response to the judgement on Saddam Hussein is not an isolated phenomenon. When US tanks entered Baghdad on April 9, 2003, BBC journalists did not conceal their delight. The BBC's Nicholas Witchell declared of the rapid advance: "It is absolutely, without a doubt, a vindication of the strategy." (BBC News at Six, April 9, 2003)

The media emphasis on the capture of Saddam Hussein repeats one of the fundamental mistakes made by successive U.S. administrations: that Hussein is Iraq. Iraq — as the peace movement has been saying, and as the U.S. occupiers and media are only beginning to discover — is a vast and complex country, and Hussein's capture does not retroactively justify the invasion and occupation. Neither does it mean that Ba'athist underpinnings of the resistance to the occupation have been dismantled or that Iraq will come to love the U.S. occupiers — or that the resistance will end.
Saddam Hussein was once an innocent boy. But the circumstances around his childhood are bewildering. His father died from cancer before he was born. His mother tried to induce Saddam's abortion, and attempted suicide. She refused the child, and the boy was raised by an uncle. Eventually, when he was finally allowed to live with her, the new stepfather physically abused him.
Saddam Hussein believed that brutality was a necessary ingredient in the exercise of political power. He made vehement enemies and to survive he had to keep his enemies in mind. That was the way of those who were politically authoritarian and who wanted more than agreement with other nations - like the fascists of 1918-19, who despised internationalism. The alternative to believing in looking tough to Iran was to join the family of nations, comply with UN resolutions and count on the international community restraining Iran.

The new Saddam Swingball Set seen here tested for child safety by some Woolworths shop assistants. Saddam Hussein was hired by Mars Corporation to advertize and publicise Bounty chocolate dyslexic bras. However, he was fatally hung during one of his filming sessions, and could not complete his proposed run of 666 adverts.
