Saddam Hussein: Iraqi Tribunal

[One] aspect of Saddam Hussein’s unification rhetoric is his use of projection devices. This term, related to psychoanalysis, involves the projection of the problem onto another group or individual. On a social level, this term is called a scapegoat. The Iraqi economy, a seemingly domestic problem, is blamed on the international Jew. Saddam Hussein’s use of rhetoric here is to displace the issue at hand to something irrelevant. This is especially appealing to the middle class, who is encouraged to feel that they could conduct their businesses without any basic change whatever, once the businessmen of a different ‘religion’ were eliminated.

Saddam Hussein's trial for crimes against humanity is coming to a close. In August the former Iraqi leader faces a separate genocide trail. One of his attorneys, former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, says Hussein has no more chance of getting a fair trial in August than he did in the current trial in Baghdad.
Saddam Hussein On another compelling level, Saddam Hussein and many Iraqis considered the boundary line between Iraq and Kuwait, cutting Iraq off from the sea, a historical wrong imposed by British imperial officials in 1922. (Humphreys, 105) Saddam was not alone in this belief. For at least half a century, Iraqi nationalists were espousing emphatically the belief that Kuwait was historically an integral part of Iraq, and that Kuwait had only come into being through the maneuverings of British imperialism.
During his 23-year reign of terror, Saddam Hussein (pictured at left in 1983) was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. On Dec. 30, Iraqi authorities executed Saddam for ordering the massacre of more than 140 Iraqis in the village of Dujail. He was buried Dec. 31 in Tikrit.

Shiver me Timbers, ye spineless scallywags! Surrender yer booty or I'll make ye walk the plank! - Saddam Hussein Just prior to Saddam's execution, the Iraqi government announced they would be manufacturing and selling "HUSSEIN" brand collared shirts. According to the Prime Minister, "They have a tight neck but they hang loose." Saddam's death was broadcast live on Al Jazeera with special guest presenter Steve Rider. George W. Bush had the honor of frisking Saddam for Dubya-Emm-Dees.
The Baath government developed by Saddam Hussein in the '70s soon won the respect of the Iraqi people and other Arab countries. With the assistance of oil money, economic development began in a manner consistent with Baath party socialist ideals. Land reclamation projects, railroads, highways, mining and manufacturing all underwent rapid development. These projects were successful because Iraq had a significant population unlike some of the sparsely populated oil producing countries and many were educated. It soon became necessary for Iraq to import labor from other Arab countries. These workers were welcomed and treated well by the Iraqi government.
