Sacrifice is a universal religious act, one closely associated with the mythologies of particular traditions. Sacrifices are often offered to divinities in the name of society by priestly castes. The offerings themselves may be symbolic or literal, vegetable or animal. Scapegoats of various kinds may be used to substitute for living offerings that a given group is unable or unwilling to give up. For example, Abraham was instructed to offer Isaac as a sacrifice and did so, but an animal became a substitute for Isaac; the Christians say that Christ died as an offering for humanity. Sacrifices are often accomplished at sacred times of the year in sacred places.

Sacrifice has five gods, Persephone, James, Stratos, Pyro, and Charnel. Persephone is the goddess of life, James resembles Earthworm Jim, who seems to have been deified after defeating Queen Slug-for-a-butt, and controls rock and earth. Stratos commands the air, Pyro is a fire god, and Charnel is the god of death and strife. Each god has a distinct personality, and their units and speeches in the single player campaign reflect this.

[I]t is quite a different thing to maintain that God demands a blood sacrifice in atonement for sin. Sacrifices were always a part of worship. Cain and Abel wanted to bring a sacrifice to God. So did Noah and Abraham. The first command to sacrifice was given to Abraham (Genesis 15:9). The people in early times were more generous than people today, so God had to limit sacrifice during the time of Moses (Exodus 36:6-7). All of the regulations about sacrifices in the books of Moses tell how little should be offered, not how much.

In Sacrifice, players control a wizard and battle up to four other wizards in various landscapes ruled by the Five Gods. The wizards can cast spells to summon creatures to fight for them or simply opt to destroy their opponents and their creatures using attack magic in the form of 50 different spells. It is even possible to cast spells that harness the elements to alter the landscape or the weather system, plunging your opponents into a newly created canyon, or blasting them with a bolt of highly charged lightning. The only rule is that if your Altar (home base) is destroyed, then your game is over.

Sacrifice was manifested in the Greek mythology of Medea. Psychoanalysts have studied what they call, the Medea Complex, which is the mirror image of the Oedipus Complex. While in the Oedipus Complex children have an unconscious wish to kill their parents, in the Medea Complex parents have an unconscious wish to kill their children. Sometimes the Medea Complex has ... been called the Isaac Syndrome. Along the same lines sociologists and historians have noted that the parents, the rulers and the older generation in power have always trained young men to be willing to sacrifice their lives for a variety of causes. Some sociologists and psychologists have viewed wars as expressions of inter-generational tension.
