Your main weapon in Rygar is the Diskarmor, which is basically a spiked shield on a chain. The Diskarmor starts out as a basic close to mid-range combat weapon. You can swing it out on its chain to smash or slash enemies, or, you can fling it to an extended distance and get it to stick into an enemy. Once an enemy is stuck, you can actually pick them up and swing them around lasso style before finally slamming them into a wall. The basic Diskarmor lends itself well to combo attacks, as you can use it to deliver multiple hits from various angles, or swing your enemy into his buddies to build up more hit damage. The more hits you can deliver from one combo, the more points you'll earn.

The graphics in Rygar are some of the most impressive to date on the Playstation 2. The particle effects such as mist and sparks all jump out, and the character models are nicely detailed and textured. The levels themselves are set in Roman-esque areas and Tecmo has really pulled that off. Every bit of every level looks genuinely Roman, from the large statues built for unnamed kings to the tall pillars and ornate buildings. The enemies in the game are based on various interpretations of Roman myths and stories, and while they definitely look the part they ... stay very original and varied. Overall, the graphics pull you in, wrap you in the garb of a warrior, and put you in the game.
Rygar Logo Rygar has some of the most awesome moves ever to grace a console. The game play is much like the Devil May Cry but has a massive combo system that never seems to get stagnant. As in DMC you control Rygar with the analog stick and execute moves with the face buttons. The Diskarmor is a shield-like yo-yo with blades on it attached to his wrist via a long chain. The Diskarmor is easy to control with the Dual Shock and switching between the weapons incarnations are easily obtained by clicking on the R2 or L2 buttons. The L1 or R1 button raises the shield for defense.

In Rygar you ... have an inventory, which you can use to view and use any items you are carrying. Items range from golden apples to regain your health to stone tablets, which reveal a little more about the game. Rygar’s carrying capacity is technically limitless, but you can only hold a certain number of certain items. You can also use the inventory screen to view and equip your various Diskarmors, as well as set, view, and unset any mystical stones you have found during your quest.
Rygar ... has an abundance of moves that he can learn throughout the game. You can learn to latch onto orbs to swing yourself across ledges and gaps to pushing blocks to open up new paths. The coolest part is some of the abilities are not earned until later in the game making you go back to pick up some of the items you may have missed in time upgrading the replay value. The controls are fairly simple, you jump with the X button and each of the other face buttons is a different style of attack. Mixing these up will create combos and Rygar can also learn different attacks by picking up power-ups throughout the game. Each diskarmor also has a summon which is great against boss battles.
Rygar starts out a side scroller. Rygar can go left and right, jump, and use his weapon, the Diskarmor. Later, he can collect a grappling hook to use as well (by pushing up+b, or down+b, if applicable) and other items allowing him to access different areas of the game. When Rygar enters a certain door, he'll find himself in an overhead view, a la Zelda. From this valley (Garloz), Rygar can access the "levels" which can be either side-scrolling or overhead. At the end of each "level", Rygar encounters a boss, which, if he defeats, will allow him to see an Indora God and get a new item.
