Ryanair: Stansted Express

Michael O'Leary, the chief executive of Ryanair, has stopped talking to Mike Clasper, his opposite number at BAA, other than to despatch the odd expletive-strewn insult in his direction. The reason for his fury is the "obscene" sums Mr Clasper wants to spend building a second runway at Stansted, which is Ryanair's main base. Even though BAA has slimmed down its cost estimate from an initial £4bn to less than £2bn, at least for the first phase, Mr O'Leary still reckons this amounts to gold-plating of Taj Mahal proportions and is damned if he is going to foot the bill for such profligacy. Stansted's second biggest user, the other low-cost carrier easyJet, thinks much the same but has couched its objections in more diplomatic language.

The flamboyant boss of Ryanair said he still intended to step down as the head of the low-cost carrier within the next two to three years but would be directly involved in the new venture. "I will personally have some say in the way it's run," Mr O'Leary said, although he expressed doubts about the likelihood of his being chief executive.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and girlfriend Carla Bruni are by no means relenting in their plans to sue Ryanair for using the couple's image in an ad. Sarkozy is only suing for a symbolic single euro -- but Bruni, who happens to be a very rich supermodel, is going for €500,000. Hilariously, the court papers filed for the suit argue seriously that Bruni has not expressed any interest in a wedding set in any destination served by Ryanair, or at a time such that potential guests could take advantage of the sale mentioned in the original ad.
