Among Ryanair's main low-cost competitors are easyJet, Air Berlin, Germanwings and Transavia. In 2004 approximately 60 new low-cost airlines were formed. Despite traditionally being a full-service airline, Aer Lingus began to adopt a low-fares strategy in 2002, leading to much more intense competition with Ryanair on Irish routes – Ryanair's most profitable.

It is Europe's largest low-cost carrier. As of 31 July 2007, Ryanair operates 516 routes across 26 countries from 26 bases[1]. Irish low fares airline Ryanair has announced it is to commence service of two new routes from Shannon Airport in County Clare, Ireland. It will now fly to Bristol, England daily and to Nantes, France three times a week. The airline will ... increase the frequency of its Shannon-Frankfurt route.

Upon seeing that they have gained a foothold of the airline industry in Europe, the management of Ryanair decided that 2001 was the year for a huge expansion. Its newest hub was Charleroi Brussels South. The following year saw more addition as 26 more routes were introduced and another hub was fathered in Frankfurt-Hahn Airport in Germany. The airline made public its purchase of 100 Boeing. The 737-800 aircraft series have made it to this airline’s bases. Italy followed suit as Milan-Bergamo was added as one of its major bases.

After thorough investigation into available systems on the market, Ryanair chose SAP R/3 as the most effective solution for the financial division. Ryanair had several reasons for selecting SAP, explains Patricia Carr, SAP delivery manager at Fusion Business Solutions. First, SAP gives the airline full integration and wide interfacing capabilities, which provides the basis for increasing Ryanairs internal control and better reporting. Despite their unpopularity, Ryanair carried 42.5 million passengers in 2006. Irish airlines, primarily Ryanair, attracted 24% of all complaints about EU airlines in 2006. [22]
