As one of the most accomplished players in the history of Major League Baseball, a Nolan Ryan speaker appearance is sure to be the highlight of any event. A legend in his home state of Texas who ... played on both coasts, Nolan Ryan’s popularity knows no bounds.
Ryan's strikeout totals are mind-boggling. His record of 5,714 will never be touched, and he struck out 10-or-more in a game 215 times (another of his records). In order for a pitcher to approach Ryan's strikeout record, he would have to average nearly 300 strikeouts over 20 seasons, which is nearly impossible. To put Ryan's strikeouts in perspective, consider that if current 'K' king Randy Johnson were to strike out 300 hitters for the next 7 seasons, he would get close to Ryan. A pitcher is going to have to average over a strikeout per inning and develop a workout regimen that would enable him to maintain his style of pitching throughout his career and stay healthy enough to avoid arm injuries and long stints on the disabled list.
Ryan Amos Ryan appeared in 19 games last season, including nine starts. He finished the season with a .216 batting average and scored two runs in 2004. In 11 conference games, Ryan hit .261. Defensively, Amos gunned down three of 11 opposing base runners. Ryan was 1-for-3 in the Tigers' 6-1 loss to #9 UC Irvine on Apr. 25th. Amos had his best series of the season against NCAA champion, Cal State Fullerton, going 3-for-6 in his three games.
Ryan terrorized the Detroit Tigers in 1973, going 4-0 (1.15 ERA) with 44 K's in 39 innings against the Bengals. During his no-hitter that season against Detroit, on July 15 in Tiger Stadium, Detroit first baseman Norm Cash came to the plate in the ninth inning carrying a wooden table leg in place of his bat. Cash figured he had little chance to make contact anyway. He didn't - he popped out to short for the game's final out.
Though he pitched for a struggling Angels team, Ryan was in the zone in '73. He hurled two no-hitters, pitched 326 innings (allowing 238 hits), and struck out a record 383 batters. He posted a 2.87 ERA in 39 starts, completing 26 games, and saving one.
Nolan Ryan is now a co-owner of two minor league teams, the Corpus Christi Hooks and the Round Rock Express, the latter named in honor of him. He has ... written six books, is chairman of Express Bank of Texas and still maintains an active appearance schedule on behalf of the Houston Astros. When he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, he received a near-unanimous 98.79% of the votes.
