Ryan Phillippe grew up just south of Philadelphia, played basketball in high school, and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He was 'discovered' when he happened to stop for a haircut at the same barbershop where an agent was getting a trim. In Phillippe's first professional role, he played Billy the gay teenager on One Life to Live in the early 1990s. Raised in a religious, sheltered environment, Phillippe says that while it was not like "coming out" if he were actually gay, it was difficult telling his father he would be playing gay on TV.

Ryan Phillippe (pronounced Fil-lih-pee) was born in New Castle, Delaware to Richard Phillippe (a chemical technician for DuPont) and Susan (who ran a day care center in the family's house); he has three sisters, Kirsten, Lindsay and Katelyn. Phillippe attended New Castle Baptist Academy, where he played basketball and soccer, as well as earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do; he was ... the Yearbook Editor in his senior year. At 15, he became interested in an acting career, inspired by a neighbor's suggestion. A casting agent spotted Phillippe in a barbershop two years later, and began sending him to auditions in New York.
