In the fight for the pole position on the 3.198 kilometre course through the city streets, Ryan Briscoe was beaten by just three-tenths of a second. Briscoe shares driving duties with Sascha Maassen from Germany. Just one-tenth of a second behind the duo, Timo Bernhard, teaming up with Romain Dumas (France), set the third fastest time. After heading into the St. Petersburg race side-by-side from the first row – a first in the American Le Mans Series – the RS Spyders were again able to beat the more powerful vehicles in the LM P1 class.

Briscoe's Panoz-Toyota had qualified on the pole, but the rear wing failed inspection and he had to start in the back. He was trying to come through the field on the 20th lap and went inside Alex Barron's Dallara-Toyota.

"I remember the initial contact with Alex (Barron) and thought that we might just get away with not hitting the wall," Briscoe said in a statement. "Suddenly I was airborne, and the rest is a little fuzzy."

Pouncing as Briscoe made his comfortable arc through the corner, Kanaan charged into the turn, braked hard and slid into the inside position. He had him. Briscoe tried to grapple back by tucking in front of Kanaan, but as the Brazilian accelerated, he resisted the move with a shove, putting Briscoe into a tire barrier before he cleared the turn.
