Curt's note: Penske Racing officials said late Saturday night that Ryan Briscoe has signed the contract to replace Sam Hornish Jr. in the No. 6 Indy car. The official announcement is due Tuesday.

Ryan Briscoe's car bursts into flames as it disentegrates on the fence in the fourth turn at Chicagoland Raceway n Joliet, IL., 9/11/05. Briscoe spent the night in a hospital with a concussion, bruised lung and broken right and left clavicles. Briscoe's car flipped over Alex Barron's and slammed into the safety barrier after the two clipped tires on the 20th lap of the PEAK Antifreeze Indy 300.

Briscoe made the winning pass with less than 25 minutes remaining, ending what had been race-long dominance by the pole-sitting car of Bernhard and Dumas. The two LMP2 cars pitted together with 50 minutes left and the race under caution. Briscoe, running second at the time, got new tires and fuel while Bernhard's crew elected to just top off the fuel tank.

Briscoe earned three top-10 finishes in 15 races with Target Chip Ganassi Racing in 2005, including a pole at Infineon Raceway. He ... started four races for Dreyer & Reinbold in 2006.

In 2001, Briscoe won the Formula Renault 2000 Italian Championship and finished fourth in the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup. He competed in the 2002 Formula 3 German Championship where he raced in six races, earning three podium appearances, as well as seven events in the Formula 3000 International Championship.

The race ... had a frightening crash that hospitalized Ryan Briscoe with two broken collarbones, a bruised lung, a concussion and contusions to his arms and legs. It was similar to Kenny Brack's crash at Texas in 2003.
