Ryan Briscoe, who signed Monday with Chip Ganassi Racing, posted the fastest speed in IRL IndyCar testing Wednesday at Homestead-Miami Speedway's 2.21-mile road course. Briscoe, an F1 test driver the last three years, posted a fast lap of 112.944 mph, edging second-fastest Tony Kanaan.

Behind the wheel of the Symantec sponsored effort will be Ryan Briscoe. Briscoe has ties to the Penske organization as well as one of the drivers of the Penske Racing American LeMans Series program. Briscoe has driven for both Target Chip Ganassi Racing and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing previously in the IndyCar Series with one previous start at Indianapolis. The Sydney, Australia native started 24th in the 2005 race, finishing 10th.

Briscoe drove Team Penske's American Le Mans Series LMP2 Porsche sportscar in 2007. He ... competed in the Indianapolis 500 for the second time, driving a car fielded by Penske's son Jay and businessman Stephen Luzco. The talented Australian driver started seventh and finished a solid fifth in the rain-shortened race.

In 2007, Briscoe shared driving responsibilities with teammate Sascha Maassen for the No. 6 DHL Porsche RS Spyder in the American LeMans Series for Penske Racing. Together they earned three victories (St. Petersburg, Salt Lake City and Lime Rock); two poles (Belle Isle and Laguna Seca) and finished second in the Championship. Their teammates, Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard, earned the Championship for Penske Racing behind the wheel of the No. 7 DHL Porsche RS Spyder.

Briscoe raced full time in 2007 for Penske Racing's American Le Mans Series team. Through that relationship, he was recruited to drive for the Indy 500-only Luczo-Dragon team, which was co-owned by Roger Penske's son Jay. Briscoe qualified seventh and finished fifth in only his second "500" start.

Briscoe was launched like a fighter jet, going above the wall and into the catch fence with the front wing. The car twisted and the rear wing slammed into the asphalt, separating the tub from the engine. Chicagoland has the SAFER barriers that have saved many drivers from serious injuries in recent years, but Briscoe went over it in going up and coming down. Briscoe stopped in Turn 3, the engine and what was left of the gearbox were in Turn 4.
