Briscoe lost control of his TF104 just 16 minutes into the afternoon session, hitting the barriers on both sides of the circuit on the approach to Eau Rouge after suffering a puncture. The Australian got out of the car unaided and gave a thumbs-up to the crowd.

On lap 19, Briscoe touched wheels with Alex Barron, launching Briscoe's car high off the track and into the debris fence of the banked oval. Kosuke Matsuura was ... caught up in the crash.

Briscoe was helped from the car by safety workers and taken to the infield care center. He was reported to be awake and alert when airlifted to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill., where he spent Sunday night listed in good condition.
