Ryan Adams: Easy Tiger
built 281 days ago
Ryan Adams just might be clairvoyant. On “Two”, a song from this year’s Easy Tiger (his best album in years), he croons the line, “I’ve got a really good heart / I just can’t catch a break.” No, it isn’t about unrequited love: he’s referring to his forthcoming summer concert in Salt Lake City, where—in fact—he really couldn’t catch a break (despite well-meaning internal organs).

ONE afternoon, as Ryan Adams was recording his new album, “Easy Tiger” (Lost Highway), at Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village, the singer-songwriter Steve Earle dropped by to visit. Jimi Hendrix had built Electric Lady in the late 1960s, and Mr. Earle pointed out that “there are some good ghosts here.”

Ryan Adams and his Cardinals have confirmed their first dates of January '08. The west coast tour extends what has already been an immensely productive year. In addition to the unanimously acclaimed new album Easy Tiger (lauded by Time as "a career breakthrough") Ryan & The Cards recently released an EP entitled Follow The Lights, comprised of "reflective and sober renditions of a handful of Mr. Adams' near-classics" (The New York Times). Ryan Adams has taken all the steps necessary to ensure that his 326th album, Easy Tiger, is a full-fledged comeback hit: He's partnered with Starbucks. He's recruited Sheryl Crow for a duet. And he's spilled his guts to the New York Times, letting fans know that his erratic behavior of the last few years were due in part to his crazy-even-for-a-rocker drug abuse:

It is understandable if fans of Ryan Adams are expecting a new album every month at this point. Not only has Mr. Whiskeytown released eight albums in the past seven years, but three of those releases came in 2005. Usually when an artist shows such a work ethic, there tends to be at least one album that is somewhat of a failure, either critically or creatively. Adams has defied the odds in producing eight highly enjoyable albums that all encompass certain characteristics of style and artistic flavor. Consistency has always been key for the busy Adams, from the catchy folk-rock of Heartbreaker to the lush story-driven melancholy of 29, Adams has truly been a symbol of integrity and consistency. Many fans were shocked to hear that his ninth solo album, Easy Tiger, holds a release date that is nearly two years following his previous album, 29.
