The short biblical book of Ruth is about a foreigner who, out of loyalty to her mother-in-law, adopts the Hebrew culture as her own and becomes an ancestor of Israel's most famous king. The story begins with a woman named Naomi immigrating eastward from the region of Judea to the land of Moab with her husband, Elimelech. He dies there and so do their two sons, who have married Moabite women. Before heading home, Naomi urges her daughters-in-law to return to their families. One of them, Ruth, refuses, declaring faithfulness to Naomi despite the hardships that await two widows in Judea. Once there, through obedience to Naomi and her own hard work as a field gleaner, Ruth gains security for both of them by persuading Boaz, Naomi's relative, to marry her and care for them both.

Ruth's symptoms began early in 2004 and included shuffling her feet and occasional forgetfulness, both of which her husband of 50 years, Billy, attributed to aging. The more immediate issue for Ruth was a severe knee problem that required surgery. But the surgical procedure had to be repeated within 10 days. It was a turning point in Ruth's life, said Billy. "She was heavily medicated and in a lot of pain after the surgery," he began. "She seemed ‘out of it' during that whole period, but we thought it was because of the medication."

Naomi and Ruth return to Bethlehem. Naomi was correct - life is hard for the two women. To avoid starvation, Ruth becomes a gleaner and collects extra grains on the farm of Boaz. Boaz is a distant relative of Elimelech, and could potentially be a new husband for Ruth.

The Book of Ruth, according to many scholars, was originally part of the Book of Judges, but it was later separated from that book and made independent. The opening verses explicitly place the Book of Ruth in the time of the Judges and it concludes with the Davidic lineage. Therefore, one could suppose that the author wrote the story after the time of King David. Exactly how long after the reign of David is the question. One possibility is around 900 B.C, shortly after David's reign. Scholars who choose this date link it to the importance of David’s lineage recorded at the end of Ruth.

Many of the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible books do not identify the author and the Book of Ruth is no different; ... there is a tradition that alludes to a possibility. The Talmud refers to Samuel as the author, but scholars do not accept this tradition. Samuel died before David became king, and the way in which the author writes the genealogy in Ruth 4:18-22 supposes that the lineage is well known. Even the reference in Ruth 1:1 to the “days when the judges ruled…†indicates that the era had ended and that the audience was somewhat removed from the time. Furthermore, Ruth 4:7 states that the legal custom of taking off a shoe to seal the agreement is no longer in use. Only a generation exists between Samuel and Boaz; therefore, it is unlikely that the time span would require this explanation.
