Russo-Japanese War: Port Arthur

The first major military conflict of the modern age, the fierce campaigns of the Russo-Japanese War were closely observed by Japan and the West alike. This exhibition of Japanese prints, photographs, and postcards from the era commemorates the centennial of the 1905 signing of the Portsmouth Treaty that ended the war.

The Treaty of Portsmouth formally ended the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05. The negotiations took place in August in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and were brokered in part by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. The final agreement was signed in September of 1905, and it affirmed the Japanese presence in south Manchuria and Korea and ceded the southern half of the island of Sakhalin to Japan.

This document comes from the notes made by OYAMA Iwao, Army Chief of the General Staff during of the Russo-Japanese War, who was engaged in directing strategy. In June, he was named Commander-in-Chief of the Manchurian Army and sent to battle. His notes depict the conditions during the occupation of Port Arthur.
