- Russian Revolution of 1917 -- Events
The Russian Revolution of 1917 profoundly affected the recent history of the world. Its impact has been felt in every corner of the globe. People, ideas, and events have all been touched by it. This thought-provoking book not only offers a short, clear narrative of what happened in 1917, but ... analyzes and discusses the whys of the revolution. Within bounds of reasonable speculation, the author raises interpretive questions about the events of 1917 in an effort to stimulate the interest and thinking of students. - Russian Revolution of 1917 -- World
[One] Russian poet and occultist, Andrei Bely, a disciple of Steiner’s Anthroposophical movement, hailed the Revolution as the first stage of a far greater cultural and spiritual revolution to come. For Bely, as for his contemporary Blok, the Bolshevic Revolution was above all a powerful theurgical instrument. Andrei Bely (1880-1934) saw theurgy as a means to change the world actively in collaboration with God. In spite of the turmoil and bloodshed, for these Russian occultists the revolution served as an instrument of the new creation. Bely celebrated the 1917 Revolution in a poem, Christ is Resurrected, in which the Bolshevic take over is compared with the mystery of Crucifixion and Resurrection. Rudolf Steiner understood why the Russians welcomed the October Revolution, but criticised Bolshevism as a dangerous mix of Western abstract thinking and Eastern mysticism. - George Sanders -- Russian Revolution
- Russian Revolution of 1917
The Russian Revolution of 1917 began because of economic breakdown, war, and people's discontent of tsar autocracy. The coalition of Bolsheviks was formed. In 1922 the history of Soviet Union began. Soviet Union included 15 Soviet Union Republics. In 1991 the USSR was gone. - Russian Revolution of 1917 -- Socialism
The Mensheviks believed that since the revolution to overthrow Tsarism was needed to allow the development of capitalism the Russian bourgeoisie should lead this struggle. The role of the working class was to support the liberal bourgeoisie in establishing a democratic republic. At some later date, as capitalism matured, the working class would begin its struggle for socialism. The Menshevik view was best summarised by one of its leaders Martynov: - Leon Trotsky -- Russian Revolution
Leon Trotsky (alternative transliterations: Trotski, Trotzky) (October 25, 1879 - August 21, 1940), was born Lev Davidovich Bronstein to Jewish parents in Yanovka, Kherson Province, Ukraine. His date of birth is in Julian calendar. In the Gregorian calendar it is November 7. This is, oddly enough, the same day as the Soviet revolution (of 1917). Since the Julian calendar was abolished in 1918, his date of death is that of the Gregorian calendar. - Palmer Raids -- Russian Revolution
The first in a series of so-called “Palmer Raids” was launched on November 7, 1919, the second anniversary of the October Revolution in Russia. Thousands of anarchists and communists were rounded up, many of whom were detained for long periods without being formally charged. In December, in a highly publicized move, more than 200 alien detainees were deported to Finland and later to Russia. Placed aboard the ship, the Buford, dubbed the “Soviet Ark,” were such prominent leftists as Emma Goldman, the Russian-born anarchist, who had drawn disapproval by opposing the draft and promoting birth control. - Vladimir Lenin -- Russian Revolution
Vladimir distinguished himself in the study of Latin and Greek. Two tragedies occurred early in his life. The first occurred when his father died of a cerebral haemorrhage in 1886. The following year, in May of 1887, his eldest brother Alexander Ulyanov was hanged for participation in a plot threatening the life of Tsar Alexander III. This, in turn, radicalized Vladimir. His official Soviet biographies have this event as central to Lenin's revolutionary exploits. - Rosa Luxemburg -- Russian Revolution
At the time of their deaths, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were leaders of the Spartacus group, the left wing of the workers' movement. They had broken from the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) after its betrayal of the 1918 German revolution. In January 1919 the social democratic government of Friedrich Ebert was trying to rebuild a capitalist Germany in tandem the ruling class. - Tsarist Russia -- Russian Revolution
The fact that Tsarist Russia was on the Julian Calendar generates often considerable confusion about the events of the Russian Revolution. The Julian Calendar runs slow, so when the February Revolution took place, it was already March on the Gregorian Calendar, and when the October Revolution took place, it was already November on the Gregorian Calendar. Some sources therefore talk about the "March" and "November" Revolutions, which may not then be intuitively identical to the February and October ones.
