The civil war was complicated by Allied intervention. In N Russia, British, French, and American forces occupied (Mar., 1918) Murmansk and later Arkhangelsk with the stated purpose of protecting Allied stores against possible seizure by the Germans; they were evacuated only in Nov., 1919. In the Russian Far East the Allies occupied Vladivostok, which the Japanese held until 1922.

These then are the fruits of Bush’s bungling: the Middle East consumed by civil war, the entire region at risk. And worst of all, for the United States, finally an environment cultivated by the Furies in which terrorism can truly flourish – stark and brutish anarchy.

I’m not saying a civil war is a desirable environment for anybody. But nor is it a geopolitical black box absolving all concerned from moral and strategic discrimination. And yet that is exactly what advocates for withdrawal from Iraq want everyone to believe — but only when it comes to Iraq.
