Russian bath... called Russian banya or bania for centuries was an essential part of living in Russia. People from Tsars to peasants not only washed there, but used it for religious ceremonies, to heal when they get sick, women gave birth and young couples found seclusion in there.
Russians liked the control of Laplanders because they gave work to all poor Russian people. Russians were building houses, working at McDonald's, cleaning toilets in all areas of the vast Laplandic Empire (which was a great job as, in fact, the toilets cleaned you), and occasionally teaching Mogul Photorobots (for some had survived after all) how to speak slightly better English.
Russian and American researchers in the Siberian tiger project continue their field work, fitting radio collars on captured tigers. They've learned Siberian tigers need so much territory that existing parks and protected reserves are far too small for them. So they've developed a plan that would safeguard all existing tiger habitat, even outside parks and reserves where tigers and people would have to continue to co-exist. They say it's the only way Siberian tigers can survive.
On November 24 and 25, police detained scores of people before, during and after "marches of dissent" in several Russian cities, beating and kicking them in the process. In St. Petersburg, Russian human rights defender Ella Poliakova, head of the Soldiers' Mothers Committee of St. Petersburg, was detained along with several other people on November 25 for 12 hours after she had attended a press conference of the opposition party Yabloko.
