JUNE 6--In a move straight out of the Naomi Campbell playbook, actor Russell Crowe was arrested early this morning for allegedly assaulting a New York City hotel employee with a telephone. The Academy Award-winning actor, 41, was hit with a felony assault count and a misdemeanor weapons possession rap, according to the below Criminal Court complaint. It is unclear why Crowe allegedly struck the Mercer Hotel concierge in the face with the phone during the 4 AM incident (the blow left the victim with minor lacerations, cops said). Crowe spent the rest of the morning in police custody before being released (without bail) after his arraignment early this afternoon. The actor, who stars as pugilist James J. Braddock in his new film "Cinderella Man," faces up to seven years in jail if convicted of the phone fracas.
Russell Crowe has committed to replace Brad Pitt as the star of Universal's State of Play, which is being directed by Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland). As previously reported, Universal sought Crowe for the role after Pitt abruptly left the project over a script dispute. Crowe joins Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman, and Robin Wright Penn in the drama about a politico-turned-journalist (Crowe) who is reporting on a killing that leads to a fast-rising politican (Norton). Along the way, the journalist develops a romance with the pol's estranged wife (Wright Penn). Shooting should start this month. Crowe is set to start work in March on Universal's Robin Hood revision Nottingham, which reunites Imagine's Brian Grazer and director Ridley Scott, the team behind American Gangster.

Crowe began acting in his adopted home country of Australia, winning acclaim in films like The Crossing (1990) and Romper Stomper (1992). In the mid-1990s he became more prominent in America in films like Sharon Stone's The Quick and the Dead (1995... starring Leonardo DiCaprio). He broke through as a heroic cop in the retro crime thriller L.A. Confidential (1997, with Kim Basinger) and won an Oscar nomination for his work as tobacco whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand in 1999's The Insider. The next year he made a huge splash playing the wronged Roman hero Maximus in Gladiator (directed by Ridley Scott).
