Rurouni Kenshin, one of the most popular anime series out of Japan, is about a red-haired swordsman who honed his skills in a deadly style known as the "Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu." The series chronicles the swordsman's travels throughout a Japan that is in the midst of its reconstruction.

Watsuki said that if one thinks of the first Rurouni story as a "side story," then one would consider the second story, echoing the "Megumi Arc," as a "pilot" for Rurouni Kenshin. According to Watsuki, the final Rurouni Kenshin series did not being entirely from his free will. Describing the creation of historical stories as "hard," Watsuki initially wanted to make his next series in a contemporary setting. An editor approached Watsuki and asked him to make a new historical story.[7]

[T]here is still plenty of historical background that comes to play in RUROUNI KENSHIN, which is perhaps one of the reasons that the series continues its run. After all, there were a lot of political factions at the time, and the transition from an isolationist feudal nation to a fully-modern industrial power was not an easy one.
