Rurouni Kenshin is a truly excellent series. What makes it stand out from other samurai, ninja, or action series is the fact that Rurouni Kenshin is firmly rooted on a highly memorable succession of events that make up its plot. There's always a good reason why any form of violence takes place. Sometimes it's political, other times it's just personal.

Rurouni Kenshin premiered on Cartoon Network on March 17, 2003. The series is set in the 1870s during the turbulent aftermath of Japan's opening to the West. Its samurai hero is hardly pleased about the changes in Japanese society as he tries to maintain its feudal and martial arts traditions. ith its well-done action sequences and a plot that resembles, in some ways, that of Blade Of The Immortal (tough samurai hero reluctantly helps a girl avenge the death of her father at the hands of treacherous agent from a different "school" of sword fighting), Rurouni Kenshin has become a major anime success in the U.S. without the benefit of TV exposure.

The Whole Rurouni Kenshin series is exceptional for an anime series but this one takes special honor. Soujiro's abuse as a child makes you sad for him but it ... clearly explains why he is like he is, and this explanation makes all the difference.

The Rurouni Kenshin series was created by Watsuki Nobuhiro. The manga is 28 volumes long and the anime is 95 episodes long. The series is made up of several main arcs: Tokyo, Kyoto, Meiji (anime only arc), and Jinchuu (manga only arc). There is ... a movie, Ishinshishi no Requiem and two OAVs, Tsuioku Hen, a four part OAV, and Seisou Hen, a two part OAV.
Rurouni Kenshin Set during the second half of the 19th century--a time of enormous change in Japanese society--Rurouni Kenshin begins when a wandering swordsman saves the life of a young woman on the streets of Tokyo. The wanderer's name is Kenshin and his blade is sharpened only on the back edge, meaning that he can use it to disable, but not kill, his enemies. The woman, Kaoru, invites Kenshin to stay at her father's kendo dojo, and he comes to her aid when she is attacked by a disgraced student. During the battle it emerges that Kenshin is Battousai the Manslayer, a vicious assassin who terrorized Japan in the turbulent years before the beginning of the Meiji Era. Now he is looking for redemption, but the forces arrayed against him will make it very difficult for him to escape his past. This first installment contains the first four episodes of a long and complex series, and the plot doesn't really begin to gather steam until episode 4.
