Murdoch's pragmatic judgement about the best exit time will be an important contribution to the debate about what the PM should and will do. More significant than President Bush's suggestion that Howard might outlast him.
To finance these acquisitions, Murdoch at times has gone to the brink, piling on so much debt in the early 1990s he needed a a major restructuring to survive. Since then its stock has gone up more than tenfold.

Costello has been careful to dodge leadership questions, at least before the Murdoch words. But he is pretty pleased the PM has been having such a good time in Washington-- and that Rupert was on the spot.
