In the mid-1980's, Murdoch bought The Internets, and what was later to be known as MySpace. He now owns the souls of all who have a MySpace page, Pat Robertson, and is busy acquiring those of godless journalists.

To help Star TV, Murdoch struck business deals with the Chinese government that didn't otherwise make sense. He pandered to China's leaders with royal treatment and sympathetic remarks toward their controversial stances, from its occupation of Tibet to its brutal opposition to Falun Gong (coverage of which earned the WSJ a Pulitzer Prize in 2001).

Why he matters: Never bet on what Murdoch will do next. His 2005 purchase of MySpace for $580 million was widely mocked -- until traffic kept increasing and Google shelled out nearly three times as much to buy YouTube.
