In RuneScape Classic, players had the ability to chose their class. One of the choices was to become a Necromancer, which gave players a higher starting level in Necromancy (the original Magic). Later when the class system was removed, all necromancers became Mages.

In RuneScape Classic, if you enter text like this: @red@, then press enter, the next text you enter will be red. You can ... do this with other colors, by just putting in the first 3 letters of the word, like blue would be @blu@.

RuneScape Classic (abbreviated RSC or RS1), publicly released on January 4, 2001, is the older version of RuneScape. It is commonly called RuneScape 1 or RS1 by players who played RuneScape Classic before RuneScape 2 was released. It was replaced on March 29, 2004, with what was then known as RuneScape 2, which is now RuneScape.

Construction first appeared in RuneScape Classic as “Carpentry”. It was impossible to gain experience, and was later replaced with agility. After years of anticipation, the skill was re-introduced by Jagex on 31 May 2006. Introduction of the skill was hinted at in the Behind The Scenes for May,[14] but many players were surprised and excited by its release. The large number of players trying to train the skill caused many players to experience lag, and Jagex installed eleven additional servers to help alleviate the problem.

Many players believe that player killing was much more fun in RuneScape Classic. All weapons had the same speed, so the Rune 2h sword was used by almost all free-to-play pkers. Members used Dragon weapons or Mage Arena staves. Once attacked, a player could not run away for three rounds of combat so pures worked to get high enough strength to kill their opponents in three hits. There was no running in RuneScape Classic, so "catching" was a vital skill. Good PKers could time it so that when someone tried to run away, they would immediately attack them and keep them stuck in the fight for three more rounds.
