The game first started in 2000 as Runescape (now referred to as RuneScape Classic), but the code and graphics engine was rewritten in 2004 to form Runescape 2, the game that is playable today from [1]. The game is designed to allow players all over the world connect and play together in real-time. The game has over 160,000 players on the game servers at any one time, and 200,000 on peak times such as weekends. Runescape was one of the very first online games to support the PvP (player verses Player) abilities. RSC (Runescape Classic) had a fairly bad PvP system, but since then, with the release of Runescape 2, it has gotten better.

The RuneScape DS set (including the Classic) was leaked by a staff member of HoaxGames.com - which rated it 1/10 because there was no 0. This quickly spread around the internet and when Nintendo and Jagex saw this, they cancelled the DS plan immediately. HoaxGames complained that it had no proper add-on keyboard on the game - and when the game was played the add-on keyboard would not function properly. The BETA version had poor quality graphics. The RuneScape servers are located in the United Kingdom (20 servers including the 2 Classic servers), the United States (79), Canada (15), the Netherlands (6), Australia (6), Sweden (8), and Finland (6) [5]. RuneScape is usually updated weekly, with the common addition of new quests and items. Larger updates are less frequent and can include additions of new locations, skills, items, mini-games or graphics.

SwiftSwitch is a RuneScape client that plays both the RuneScape Classic and RuneScape version of the game. SwiftSwitch was created by Jason Fah better known by his RuneScape name Strider3282.SwiftSwitch was created in Visual Basic 6 and uses the Internet Explorer shdocvw.dll control to view Runescape. Which is exactly what Internet Explorer uses. Runescape is not loaded from a foreign source, but loaded from www.runescape.com. Simply put, SwiftSwitch is just like a browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox ect. but with tools and handy links designed specifically for Runescape players.SwiftSwitch does NOT give any unfair advantages what-so-ever.

RuneScape 2 was launched in March of 2004, replacing RuneScape 1, which is now referred to as RuneScape Classic. Paying players can still access and play RuneScape Classic through the official RuneScape website. The second game added more locations, a huge amount of items, armor, and weapons, and many new enemies and quests.

RuneScape DS is an unreleased version of RuneScape Classic and RuneScape 2 on the DS. It was rumoured. Nintendo confirmed that RuneScape DS would be released by the 13th of July 2006, but it was never released. A bonus game known as RuneScape Classic DS would have been included in the game for free for a limited time only. The cover art was never designed or released.
