Runescape was in its infancy and the resources available for struggling players were few and of relatively poor quality. There were so many services players were screaming out for yet Jagex was simply unable to provide – Runescape skill guides, quest guides, forums, calculators, tips, general help etc. This inability to provide the most basic help was the catalyst for the formation of many Runescape help sites many of which are still in existence today.

Perhaps the area guides and guides explaining skills were necessary in the early days of runescape. Now... they patently are not. Jagex has their own resources - a knowledge base. They don’t give out information about quests, nor do they explain things like the best way to level skills. They dispense knowledge, but not knowledge born of experience.
