Runes are small, weightless stones that allow users to cast spells using the magic skill. Some of these spells can be used for combat while others can be used to benefit the player casting them.

Runes are small stones inscribed with magical glyphs that can be inserted into Socketed Items. Runes are different from other Insertable Items: not only do individual Runes have set magical properties, certain combinations (or Rune Words), when inserted into an item in the proper order, give that item even more wondrous abilities.

Runes are a very old alphabet found in inscriptions on stone in Scandanavian countries. Although related to the Latin and Greek alphabets it actually belongs to the Germanic group of languages.

Usually, runes are inscribed on stones or wood. Depending on which set you have bought, or made, you will have either 24 or 25 runes. Modern-day rune sets that you buy at the local bookstore will more than likely have the Blank Rune, or Wyrd, as it is sometimes called; rune masters who deplore the Blank Rune will not add it to the set. The Elder Futhark, used for writing proto-Norse (urnordisk, urnordiska), consist of twenty-four runes, often arranged in three rows of eight. The earliest known sequential listing of the full set of 24 runes dates to c400CE and is found on the Kylver Stone in Gotland. The 24 Elder Futhark runes with their common transliterations are:

Viking runes weren't written with pen and ink on paper. Instead, runes were carved with a knife or chisel into stone and wood. To make carving into these surfaces easier, the runes were made using only straight lines. Words were formed by separating groups of runes with a period.
