In the late nineteenth century German occultists revived interest in runes, which became associated with Teutonic racial superiority. The Nazi swastika is the runic symbol for Thor's hammer... symbol of the Earth Mother, and the runic S symbol was used by the SS, the Nazi secret police.

Thirty runes make up the core runes. They are divided into the Five Worlds, the Ten Ancient Polarities, the Five Elements, the Five Movements, and the Five Forms. These categories are mutually exclusive, but are ... complementary. The elements are the raw matter used in the creation of the physical world, while the ancient polarities are the energies that make up the worlds of the Other Side. The interactions of matter and energy are in turn determined by the movements, which determine the patterns the other runes create. Finally, the forms can be seen as the inhabitants of the worlds, the basic forms of life whose creation is the ultimate expression of the other runes.

Perhaps two runes were destroyed forever by the Nazis. These are the swastika, originally Mjoelhir, Thor's hammer and the symbol of the Earth Mother and the sun; and the sig or S rune, the trademark of Heinrich Himmler's "Schutzstaffel," or the SS. The Norse neo-Pagans tried to bring back the Swastika as a runic symbol without much success.

In PvE, runes can be sold to and purchased from Rune Traders in cities. The traders only sell runes that other players have sold to them, so runes that are in high demand and runes from newly-released expansions may not always be in stock. Also, traders only deal in already-identified runes, so you will not be able to unlock runes by buying them from the rune trader.

A Norns cast is very simple, consisting of three runes, drawn one at a time from the rune pouch and laid in a row. If face down, flip them over as if turning the pages of a book. The first rune represents the past of the situation in question. The second indicates the present, the path that the querier is currently on. The third suggests the future, a likely outcome if one continues on the present path.

The runes are strongly connected with the Viking gods and mythology, for example Fehu, the first rune in the futhark, is connected with Frey, the god of fertility. The gods themselves were thought to be able to use the runes to call up the elemental forces of nature. Indeed it was believed that Odin could resurrect the dead by using the runes.
