Runes: Meanings

Runes are oracles, and oracles are often obscure. Each rune can mean many different things. It is up to the runecaster to decide how these meanings apply to the question at hand. You may get even deeper interpretations through your own instinctual reactions to the rune's definition. However, don't delude yourself in thinking that you have a completely different understanding of the cast than indicated by the traditional interpretations. Stick to the recognized interpretations, but learn to expand on their meanings through insight and meditation.

Runes certainly aren't a replacement for gems. The days of a triple-socketed Perfect Diamond shield (great combination for adding to resistances) aren't over, and skulls will continue to be useful and valuable for their effects. Of course, the other gems will remain as useful as they were before, while runes provide an alternative choice in some cases. Additionally, runes, gems, and jewels will not have to compete as much with the powerful rare items, since magic items can now gain sockets through a few different methods.

Upon reaching a certain Runecrafting level, you'll have the ability to make multiple Runes from a single Essence, since you'll have more control and skill over crafting them. You will always receive the same amount of experience from crafting each kind of Rune, regardless of the number you make.

Medieval runes were in use until the 15th Century. Of the total number of Norwegian runic inscriptions preserved today, most are medieval runes. Notably, more than 600 inscriptions using these runes have been discovered in Bergen since the 1950s, mostly on wooden sticks (the so-called Bryggen inscriptions). This indicates that runes were in common use side by side with the Latin alphabet for several centuries. Indeed some of the medieval runic inscriptions are actually in Latin language.

As your Runecrafting skill develops, you will be able to craft multiple runes from one piece of rune essence. Below is a table to show you what level you need to be, to get more runes from your essence. Remember that although you are getting multiple runes per essence, you will only get Runecrafting experience for each essence you convert into runes. For example, if you are level 33 Runecrafting, and you craft 4 air runes from 1 essence, you only get experience using 1 rune essence and not for making 4 air runes.
