Ruby text is usually presented alongside the base text, using a smaller typeface. The name "ruby" in fact originated from the name of the 5.5pt font size in British printing, which is about half the 10pt font size commonly used for normal text. Figure 1.1 shows an example, with three ideographs (kanji) as base text, and six hiragana giving the reading (shinkansen - Japanese bullet train).

Ruby Mercantile, 1930's Upon investigating, the authorities found that the telephone, the only one in Ruby, had been torn off the wall and its wires cut. The store and its post office had been robbed. Upon questioning neighbors it was found that two unknown Mexicans had been seen in the area and two sets footprints were found in the dust around the mercantile. That same night a prominent rancher in the area reported that two of his best saddle horses and eight head of cattle had been stolen. Believing that the two incidents might be connected, lawmen followed the cattle trail, searching in vain for the rustlers. In the months that followed a number of suspects were rounded up but no charges were made.
By 1917 Ruby had seen a lot of development. The large white colored building in the lower middle of the photo is the Northern Commercial Company store and warehouse. Below that, near the water, is Simon's sawmill one of two in Ruby. Note the telephone poles behind town to the right. Telephone service was available at least as far as New York Creek.
