The battle system for RPG Maker XP is by default a front view turn based battle system. The contrast in this version of RPG Maker lies within the actors or heroes in the player's party. The new setup allows users to create new animations for both party and enemy battlers. An advantage to having such a battle system is it allows for better graphical presentations; a downside... is enemies and characters stay in the same location and lack movement, which was a prime feature in the battle systems of the other RPG Maker series. The battle system (because it is scripted in the database using both RGSS and Ruby) can be edited by the user to conform to whatever they want, within the limits of the program. Some battle systems that have been created mimic those in popular games such as the Final Fantasy series or Chrono Trigger games.
Sequel to RPG Maker (PSX) moves the roleplaying creation experience into the 3D realm by harnessing the power of the PS2. RPG Maker II offers everything players could need to bring their own fantasy game worlds to life. Build original worlds from scratch using a variety of 3D tools that include: a character editor, map creation tools, visual FX editor, script editor, and monster animation. By providing fully rendered 3D models for all the characters, monsters, backgrounds, and items, RPG Maker II lets you write your own stories and make them come to life. RPG Maker VX puts a selection of powerful tools at the designer's fingertips, but in such a way that it doesn't overwhelm the fledgling. The first tool most folks would grab is the map editor. Not only does VX give the designer a huge canvas for world layout, it ... gives the possibility of making links between one map and another. So if you want to put a dungeon in your world, you build your dungeon in a separate map, and then link them using a simple “teleport” event. There are lots of different types of events you can use in the game, and it couldn't be simpler. Right click, choose “add event” and then walk through the options you want to implement.

With a wide new array of tools and features, RPG Maker makes its return bigger and better than ever. As many already know, the program has seen a major overhaul since its last large change. Gone are the limitations of 256 colors and graphics sizes. Now tileset and spriteset size is defined by the user, giving infinite possibilities. Other additional changes most notable are picture displays during battle, customizable icon sets (now in full color compared to the previous black and white,) and extra map layers.
