We'd heard about the 8000-plus bottle wine cellar, but when news emerged that young gun chef, Dan Hunter, fresh from his reign as head chef of Spain's revered Mugaritz restaurant in San Sebastian, was taking over the kitchen, the 158-year-old pub became a hot destination.

The original plan for an employee share scheme was rightly condemned by the CWU as backdoor privatisation, but for the government and Royal Mail managers a phantom share scheme is an acceptable halfway house to their goal. It will get the system up and running and workers used to "owning" and swapping shares. When the political climate is better, the government can simply rush a bill through parliament and turn the phantom share scheme into a real one with ease.

In 2004 a system was launched—aimed primarily at small businesses—that allows users who have paid a monthly or yearly fee to create and print their own stamps.

The Royal Mail has threatened legal action against Artrepublic for selling James Cauty's series of prints featuring the well-known bust of the Queen wearing a gas mask underneath her crown. Stuart Lockyear, a partner at law firm Davenport Lyons, said the Royal Mail seemed to have a strong case for copyright infringement. He said there was a possible defence of fair dealing, but that was generally used for literary works. Another possible route was the using the freedom of expression clause in the Human Rights Act, but that had never been tested in the UK, he said.

Royal Mail contracted with Lockheed Martin to build the Address Interpretation (AI) platform in 1999. This electronic sortation platform now automatically sorts up to 6o million mail items per night. The SmartStamp system is a new service that has been enabled by AI. SmartStamp was built by Lockheed Martin and its partner GFT AG. Revenue protection for SmartStamp is done by the AI system
