On the one hand, Royal Mail is actively reducing the environmental impact of its business. In addition to the double-decked trailers, they have ... signed a deal with EDF Energy to supply 2,500 sites with 100 per cent renewable energy. But much letter post can and will be replaced by electronic communication, cutting environmental waste more directly. The simple fact is that a greener Royal Mail is probably a smaller Royal Mail, something not in the interest of the managers of the business.

Royal Mail collects, processes and delivers 82 million items to 27 million addresses every day. The fleet includes over 30,000 vehicles which, just like their loads, come in all shapes and sizes. The time-sensitive reality of Royal Mail’s business means the pressure is on to keep moving.

Lifting the lid on this momentous proposed changes was The Times, who led with the story on the front page of its business section on December 15, with the headline 'Industry angry at Royal Mail plan to charge by letter size'. This sparked a whole flurry of interest from other media. The Greeting Card Association (GCA) was well placed to respond to any enquiries with Special Envoy William McCracken on hand for interviews. Putting the greeting card industry's point of view across, William was interviewed on BBC's Radio 5 Live and London's leading news station, LBC.

Mailings made under the scheme will carry a Royal Mail carbon neutral logo to demonstrate to customers that the sending business is taking its commitment to the environment seriously. They will ... be asked to include WRAP's (Waste and Resources Action Programme) Recycle Now logo to encourage the recipient to dispose of the mail piece in the most environmentally friendly way.
