Roulette is played with a small wheel with pockets at the bottom. These pockets have a number inside each one of them ranging from 1 – 36. Each pocket is arranged in the wheel with alternate colors, black and red. One pocket ... has a zero on it, and it is colored green. As the wheel is spun around by the croupier, he will also eventually spin a small smooth ball into the opposite direction of the wheel’s spin and wait for the ball to fall into one of the pockets. Players try to foresee where the ball might fall and place their bets on their favored number before the croupier starts the spin.

Roulette is based around the notion of a spinning wheel. The American Roulette wheel is comprised of 38 slots, each numbered individually: 0, 00, 1, 2, 3, and all the way to and including 36. The English Roulette wheel is similar... does not include the 00 in its wheel. Each numbered section of the wheel is hollow, making it easy for the spinning ball to "fall" into a section. The numbers around the wheel alternate between pairs of even and pairs of odd numbers, in the same way that they alternate between red and black colourings on the numbers. The only two numbers in American Roulette who are not part of this equation are 0 and 00, as they are coloured green.

It is designed in such a way that the distribution of numbers and colours is statistically even and provides a fair (equal) chance of any numbers playing down. This is done to normalize the game odds, which is necessary for more or less complicated roulette betting. The colours alternate; so do pairs of numbers across the wheel. If you carefully study the roulette wheel you will soon see a clear pattern in disposition of the numbers. While it's self evident that no two throws of a ball are dependent on each other, the normalization is needed because of the possibility of placing multiple bets under different conditions and odds.
