As gambling was illegal in France during this time, the game came onto the scene in Hamburg, Germany where it grew in popularity and replaced an earlier version that featured higher odds. Some time later, Francois and his son Camille brought the game back to southern France for the Prince of Monaco, Charles III and the lavish, world-famous resort of Monte Carlo was born.
