Description: The Rottweiler is a medium-large, robust, powerful dog. His build denotes great strength, agility and endurance. The Rottweiler is a working dog, he is the happiest when there is a job to do whether it is herding, competing in obedience, tracking, search and rescue or retrieving the newspaper. He is an effective guard dog, but needs firm handling and proper training. A Rottweiler will defend his family and property to the end, but he does have a tendency to become loyal to one person. An inexperienced owner should not consider this breed.

The Rottweiler has a massive, powerful body. Muscular and athletic, it has a broad head and rounded forehead. The muzzle is well-developed with a scissors bite. Its eyes are dark with an expression of goodwill and loyalty. The ears are triangular, carried forward, and its nose is wide and black. The lips are black and inside the mouth it is dark-colored.

As with many large dogs, the Rottweiler has a shorter life expectancy than many other breeds, and lives to around 9-10 years. There are a number of health problems to look out for with this breed, and this includes heart problems, eye diseases, bloat, thyroid problems, cancer, OCD, HD, seizures, and allergies. The parents of the Rottweiler puppy should have OFA and CERF certificates and heart clearance.

As an athletic and fairly energetic breed, the Rottweiler needs daily exercise and attention. The coat is easy to care for, requiring only the occasional brushing. Major health concerns for the breed include canine hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, subaortic stenosis and osteosarcoma.

According to The Rottweiler in Word and Picture, the two strains were always kept separate& were not interbred. The larger type had colour established, while the smaller dogs frequently carried white markings. This aspect was ignored, because they were bred solely for their working ability. The first Rottweiler standard was written in 1883& published in 1901. It has been suggested that it covered both breeds. Ironically in 1901 the breed standard, in regards to colour, states that the most common& preferable colour was black with russet or, yellow markings.However, it accepted a number of alternative base colours such as black stripes on an ash grey background.
