Rotten Tomatoes is a website devoted to reviews, information, and news of movies and video game s. The name derives from the use of tomato es and other produce thrown at stage performers if a performance was particularly bad. The website created a distinctive means to summarize the general critical opinions about these works. The staff search the internet for websites that contain reviews of particular films and games from the amateur to the professional. Once found, the staff determines if the review is positive ("fresh", marked by a small icon of a red tomato ) or negative ("rotten", marked by a small icon of a green splatted tomato).

March 12, 2007 - IGN's sister site Rotten Tomatoes has compiled a list of the 100 Worst-Reviewed Films of All Time. Three movies based on videogames, all directed by Uwe Boll, managed to weasel onto the list. None of these films managed to be bad enough to take top billing on the Hollywood list no one wants to be included in.

For those who couldn't care less what a bunch of journalists have to say about Battlefield Earth (94% rotten), Rotten Tomatoes has many other appealing features. It is an excellent source of pre-release information and official movie Web site addresses. It covers video and DVD releases as well as big-screen film news. It provides flipbooks--short collections of frames from movie trailers available on-line. Users with slower Internet connections will appreciate being able to check out trailers without necessarily committing an hour to downloading them. Finally, Rotten Tomatoes is currently showcasing its second annual Rotten Awards, which compile the best and worst movies of 2000 as broken into numerous categories.

Rotten Tomatoes is ... a good example of a site that was able to effectively compete with sites having much stronger distribution and resources. While Yahoo Movies still generates more traffic than Rotten Tomatoes, a relatively simple product innovation was able to create a sustainable business and a formidable competitor to the much larger Yahoo and IMDB. Even after the major sites mimicked Rotten Tomatoes, the site continued to grow. The main reason for this was search. Search levels the playing field for smaller sites. If you have a content-oriented / information service site, you are probably best off focusing your time on SEO, because natural search rankings will prove more defensible than having the best feature set.

Rotten Tomatoes was acquired by IGN in June 2004 after being courted for nearly a year. The decision to sell was a difficult one for the Rotten Tomatoes team, as they recognized the improvement in the ad market and continued traffic growth of the site. Had they waited another two years, there is no doubt that the purchase price would have been higher than $10M, given recent precedent transactions for top tier content sites. So why did they decide to sell?
