Ronald Reagan: Nancy Reagan
built 628 days ago
Reagan and his first wife, actress Jane Wyman, had two children, Maureen and Michael, before divorcing in 1948. He married actress Nancy Davis in 1952 and had two more children, Patricia and Ronald Prescott, who goes by Ron. Maureen Reagan died of cancer in 2001.

On a personal level... Reagan was an enigma. He was a friendly man who had practically no close friends except his wife Nancy. He forgot the names of senior officials, and was remote even from his four children, one of whom - Patti, his daughter from his second marriage - openly rebelled against his conservatism. Edmund Morris, his official biographer, once called him "the most mysterious man I have ever confronted. It is impossible to understand him."
In the latter years of his presidency, "The Gipper", as Reagan was called after a character in Knute Rockne, was increasingly questioned about his grip on the presidency. Many political commentators and private citizens suggested that his wife Nancy and other senior officials were really in charge. These rumours were given added fuel by pictures of Reagan looking confused, and Nancy whispering instructions into his ear after a question was asked of him.

In his acting career, Reagan found himself limited mainly to uninspired, unsuccessful comedies (including, in 1951, the unfortunately titled Bedtime for Bonzo, for which he was ridiculed in his later political career). Personally... Reagan achieved happiness with his marriage in March 1952 to actress Nancy Davis, who shelved her own career ambitions to be his full-time wife. They had two children, Patricia Ann (1952) and Ronald Prescott (1958).

Whether conservative voters can be won over to Nancy Reagan's position is an open question. According to a March poll by Peter D. Hart Research Associates for the Civil Society Institute, 44 percent of conservatives think federal funding should be extended to new cell lines that meet ethics regulations, compared with 28 percent who believe current restrictions should remain intact.
